In an interview in 2016, Poonam Pandey had admitted that she creates controversies to get “recognition” in Bollywood. Back then, the Lock Upp fame was speaking to the news agency IANS, when she said it was her desire to get noticed in the industry that made her do all of it.

“Then I saw there were so many girls in this industry who had worked with the Khans and the Kapoors, but people still did not recognise them as they know only Khans and Kapoors,” Pandey said.

“In such a scenario, it’s very difficult to get your own identity, especially if you come from nowhere. Hence, to get that identity and recognition, I thought only controversy could help,” the actress added.

Poonam Pandey passed away on Thursday, February 1. The news of her death was first revealed in a post shared on her official Instagram handle. “This morning is a tough one for us. Deeply saddened to inform you that we have lost our beloved Poonam to cervical cancer. Every living form that ever came in contact with her was met with pure love and kindness. In this time of grief, we would request for privacy while we remember her fondly for all that we shared,” the post read.

Poonam Pandey was a popular model. Her popularity skyrocketed after she had promised in a video message ahead of the 2011 Cricket World Cup final that she would strip if India won the final match. With her audacious claim, this was the first time she drew attention to herself across all social media platforms.

Once, everyone was also left shocked after a bathroom video of the actress leaked on social media. In the viral clip, Pandey was seen dancing while taking a shower. Later, this video was blocked by YouTube.
