The actress recently opened up about her struggle with postpartum depression.

Being a new mother can be very challenging for women. Some may even end up suffering certain mental conditions like postpartum depression, which can become very harmful for the mother as well as the child. Popular Pakistani actress Sarwat Gilani recently opened up about her battle with postpartum depression, making some shocking revelations. Sarwat Gilani recently appeared on a TV talk show, where she detailed her deeply troubling experience with postpartum depression. Sharing her pregnancy journey, she said that she did not experience the condition after the birth of her two sons nor was she aware of it. While with her daughter, she faced an entirely different scenario.

Sarwat recalled meeting her newborn daughter after four days of the delivery, since it was conducted through a surgery and they were kept in different wards. She mentioned further that during that period, she felt overwhelmed and her mind was plagued with negative thoughts. According to her, at one point she wanted to harm her newborn to get rid of the mental toll.

She stated, “I was crying uncontrollably and told my husband that I wanted to harm our daughter to stop all the tension.” She then spoke on the lack of information and how unaware the women are on the topic of pregnancy. Most of the time they end up relying on books and social media. According to her, the first pregnancy could be very challenging for a woman, as she may experience a lot of psychological issues. So, husbands and in-laws have to provide their full support to her during that period. She added, “When a pregnant woman receives support from her family, it positively impacts her mental health.”

Mentioning her husband Fahad Mirza, Sarwat said he made her understand that she is going through postpartum depression, and assured that it will not last forever. His words became a source of comfort for her. Speaking further, the actress highlighted how important it is for men and women to be aware of this condition.
