Vettaiyan Box Office Day 1: Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan Film Opens Strong, Earns Rs 30 Cr
Vettaiyan Box Office Day 1: The film opens strong at Rs 30 crore on Day 1. Mixed reviews pour in, praising Rajinikanth's performance, but critics feel the storyline falls short of expectations.

Vettaiyan Box Office Day 1: TJ Gnanavel’s Vettaiyan starring Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan has kicked off with a solid Rs 30 crore opening across India on its first day. Released on October 10, the much-anticipated film registered impressive occupancy rates, particularly in the Tamil sector with 53.96 percent and 34.15 percent in the Telugu sector, according to Sacnilk.com. However, the Hindi and Kannada sectors witnessed lower numbers, with 8.11 percent and 10.79 percent, respectively.

Early box office predictions seem to be on track, with fans flocking to cinemas to witness the iconic pairing of Rajinikanth and Amitabh, who are reuniting after 33 years since their last film Hum (1991). Social media, however, is split with mixed reviews. Some viewers are thrilled by the performances and thematic depth, while others have expressed disappointment. One fan commented on X, “Thalaivar leads the way and carries the movie on his shoulders, but the best part is, he’s not alone. The screenplay is gripping and addresses core social issues.”

Vettaiyan revolves around Sharanya (Dushara Vijayan), a government school teacher who exposes a drug trade near her school. Kanyakumari SP Athiyan, played by Rajinikanth, takes up the case and delivers justice with his infamous ‘encounter’ style. However, the drug bust soon uncovers a larger conspiracy, intertwining personal and social stakes.

The film also features an ensemble cast with Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Ritika Singh, and Amitabh Bachchan, who makes his Tamil debut. Despite being praised for its gripping police procedural elements and tight writing in parts, some critiques have highlighted flaws. News18 Showsha rated it 2.5/5, citing that while the film had potential, Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life presence diluted the intensity of the storyline. Fahadh Faasil’s character, Battery, brought a refreshing comic element, and Amitabh’s character was impactful but underutilised.

For now, Vettaiyan seems to be doing well at the box office, and with its ensemble cast, it will be interesting to see how it performs in the coming days.
