This is believed to be a must-watch film for people who are greatly fond of science fiction films. The story revolves around a submarine that sank in the Caribbean Sea. In January 1994, the US Ohio-class submarine named USS Montana encountered an unidentified object inside the sea, which led to the sinking of the submarine. Despite multiple external challenges, the US Army decides to send a team to recover the submerged submarine. As the team started their search operation they faced a tough fight with the Soviet Ships, who were also eager to get hold of the submerged US submarine.

As the rescue team continued their search they were hit by a strong storm. Due to the storm, the communication between the rescue team and the land team breaks leaving them in great danger. The rescue cable also broke down and got submerged in the water. The film speaks about various incidents that the crew faced while carrying out the operation. With such an interesting storyline, the film has been rated 7.5 by IMDB.

The Abyss was first premiered in theatres on August 9, 1989. Soon after its release the film was highly praised by the audience and recorded a box office collection of around $90 million ( approximately Rs 750 crore). The film has received four Academy Award nominations and clinched the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The film is presently streaming on the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video.
