The Indian Film Festival Of Melbourne 2017 is all set to commence from August 11, 2017. While a total of 60 films in 20 languages will be screened, it's Alankrita Shrivastava's directorial Lipstick Under My Burkha, that'll open the festival.
This year's line-up will have diversity as its central theme and will include a wide array of films including indie films and short films. These films, from India and the subcontinent, include over 30 Australian premieres.
One of the films, Pinky Beauty Parlour, directed by Akshay Singh revolves around the tale of two sisters who're battling with the society's idea of ideal skin tones. The film takes us on a touching journey of two sisters’ lives, Pinky and Bulbul, who run a Beauty parlour in one of the by-lanes of Varanasi, the holiest of cities in India.
Another short film titled Aaba will be screened at the festival. The film is set in a village of Arunachal Pradesh and is about a young girl who lives with her grand parents after the loss of her parents. The film has been directed by Amar Kaushik.
The Cinema Travellers, a film premiered at Cannes 2016, will also be screened at the festival. The movie showcases the journey of showmen who travel with reels of cinema to the rural village audiences, and how the time has changed and how technology has changed over time.
IFFM is supported by the Victorian Government and last year it was awarded the prestigious Melbourne Award. The award recognises significant contributions to the city and highlights the inspirational stories and achievements of Melburnians from all walks of life.
