Sobhita Dhulipala belongs to the new breed of actresses who have no qualms about appearing in unconventional cinema and do not consider themselves a part of the rat race. Not being a native Hindi speaker, her entry into Bollywood was not easy. Anurag Kashyap, who has a penchant for casting raw talent in his gripping reality-based tales, cast her in Raman Raghav 2.0 and she was widely appreciated for her role. She also entered Telugu cinema with Goodachari and has since been selective about her projects.
Sobhita has now gone international in a big way with the Hollywood film Monkey Man, starring Dev Patel, who also directed the film. The trailer for Monkey Man, which is set in India, grabbed eyeballs ever since it was unveiled. The film was released in the US on April 5 and is scheduled to release in India on April 26. Sobhita plays an important role as a sex worker in the film. Her character, named Sita caters to the pleasurable needs of the powerful criminals. Sobhita has now said that it was a great experience, playing the role of Sita in the film.
In a recent conversation with The New York Times, Sobhita shared her perspective on depicting characters from the margins of society. Being entrusted with characters like them is truly an honour… If a role resonates with me or I can contribute something meaningful to the narrative, I aspire to be a part of it.”
Sobhita also shared her experience working with a first-time director like Dev Patel. She said that working with a first-time director has a certain amount of purity and passion, the reason that she agreed to be a part of Monkey Man. The action-packed film revolves around a young man with childhood trauma – played by Dev Patel, who vents it all out in an underground fighting ring wearing a gorilla mask.
