Rajkumar Santoshi who is about to embark on an ambitious project titled Lahore 1947 with Aamir Khan, Sunny Deol Preity Zinta, has been sentenced with two years of imprisonment, pertaining to a cheque bounce case. The court has also directed the film-maker to owe double the amount that he owes to the complainant.
Going by a report by the news agency ANI, a Jamnagar resident and the owner of Shreeji Shipping, Ashok Lal, had lent a sum of Rs 1 Crore to Rajkumar Santoshi, for a film in 2015. The director later repaid the loan through 10 cheques of Rs. 10 lakhs each, which bounced in December 2016. Despite the efforts made by the complaint to contact Rajkumar Santoshi, when he couldn’t reach the film-maker, Ashok Lal filed the case under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Earlier, the Jamnagar court had directed Santoshi to compensate Ashok Lal with Rs 15,000 for every cheque that got bounced, amounting to Rs 1.50 lakh on April 15, 2023. However, Rajkumar Santoshi declined the court summons but later had to appear when a bailable warrant was issued against him. Fast forward to February 17, 2024, the Jamnagar court not only sentenced Rajkumar Santoshi to two years imprisonment but has also asked him to shell out Rs. 2 crores as a compensation for Ashok Lal.
Meanwhile, Rajkumar Santoshi, Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan will collaborate for the first time for a film titled Lahore 1947. While the buzz for the film was already high, recently, the director raised the audiences’ expectations by announcing that AR Rahman and Javed Akhtar would also be a part of the film. The Indian Express quoted him as saying, “It’s a reunion with the most talented people. I worked with Aamir in Andaz Apna Apna and this time he is collaborating as a producer. On the other hand, with Sunny Deol, we made the most loved films like Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak.” The director had added that this is the “ best dream team and rare to come together.”
