New Delhi: For the warm, enigmatic Sushmita Sen playing the role of a corpse in her Bengali debut film 'Nirbaak' was the toughest. The actress, who will be seen in National Award wining director Srijit Mukherji's new film, states that the film was challenging for her because it because it had a lot of layers and "there was a lot of silence in the film".
In an exclusive chat with IBNlive.com, Sushmita Sen explained why she was absent from films for the last four years and what made her choose 'Nirbaak' as her comeback venture. "Initially I took some time off for my younger daughter Alysa. She was a month old when I got her home and she needed my time and attention. Some scripts were offered back then but I refused as I wanted to devote time at home. Then the scripts dried off," says the actress candidly and adds, "I have got to say that Rituda (late filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh) had come to Mumbai to discuss a film with me but unfortunately it could not happen. I will always regret that."
"I chose 'Nirbaak' mainly because of the director. I love Srijit's films and I've watched all his previous films including the last one 'Chotushkone'. The story was very different from what I have been offered so far. So that attracted me as well. There is so much silence in the film, the way it has been shot is rather comforting at the same time different," says Sushmita.
The trailer of the film suggested that it is a film dealing with complex emotions. Was it emotionally tiring for her to be a part of such a film? "I don't think it was tiring, but challenging, yes for sure," says the former Miss Universe. "I get tired playing the same role again and again. This, on the other hand, was completely new though I have to admit playing the corpse was the hardest! Because if you see the trailer, the corpse has a relationship of its own with a man, it is a complex one."
Sushmita says that her character in the film is very "contemporary and she loves the city Kolkata where she is born and brought up, her roots and her life there" Lauding the team of 'Nirbaak', the actress admits that shooting for the film was easy.
So, is she planning to do more Bengali films after this? "Well Anjan da (Anjan Dutta, her co-star in the film) has discussed an idea with me but he is currently busy with other projects so let's see," says Sushmita and adds optimistically, "I am looking forward to the times ahead. I am going to be acting full time and make up for the four years in between when I was away from the industry."
Directed by Srjit Mukherji and produced by Venkatesh Films, 'Nirbaak'- which means speechless in Bengali- features Jisshu Sengupta, Ritwick Chakraborty and filmmaker-actor Anjan Dutta along with Sushmita Sen.
