Madhya Pradesh police is likely to challenge stand-up comedian and Bigg Boss 17 winner Munawar Faruqui’s interim bail in the controversial 2021 case. As reported by the news agency PTI, the Tukoganj Police Station might challenge Faruqui’s bail in its chargesheet.
“Our investigation into the matter is ongoing, and the chargesheet has not yet been submitted to the court,” Tukoganj police station in-charge Jitendra Singh Yadav told PTI.
Reportedly, the delay in filing the chargesheet is because of the Madhya Pradesh state government’s pending permission approval. Once this is granted, the chargesheet will be filed in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) mandate.
Munawar Faruqui was arrested in January 2021 after a complaint was filed against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments during one of his shows in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The comedian had to stay in jail for 37 days but was later granted bail by the Supreme Court. Later in November of the same year, he took to social media and announced that he had quit stand-up comedy. Back then, the comedian had issued a statement and alleged that 12 of his shows were cancelled in just two months due to threats of vandalism.
During the same time, the Madhya Pradesh police also filed a plea to pursue charges against Faruqui under section 295A of the Indian Penal Code. However, the state government has not given its approval to file the chargesheet yet.
This comes days after an FIR was filed against a Munawar Faruqui fan for using an unregistered drone during his Dongri roadshow.
Munawar Faruqui emerged as the winner of Bigg Boss 17 on January 28, 2024. The comedian took home a trophy, prize money of Rs 50 lakh and a luxurious car. While Munawar won Salman Khan’s show, Abhishek Kumar was the first runner-up followed by Mannara Chopra, Ankita Lokhande and Arun Mashetty.
