Malayalam actor Mohanlal has come under fire after an old video of him dismissing the MeToo movement in 2019 has surfaced online. The video is doing the rounds on X just a day after he announced his resignation as the President of AMMA. In the video, which reportedly dates back to 2019, a journalist asked Mohanlal about the MeToo movement, that witnessed its first phase in India at the time. Mohanlal laughed it off at first, seemingly mocking that men should also come and talk about the times they faced sexual misconduct.
“We can also come out with #MeToo. Gender wise, we should also start #MeToo,” he said with a laugh. When the journalist asked him what he meant, Mohanlal immediately added, “Nothing. I don’t know. See, I cannot make a comment on that because when you experience, then only you will have to talk about that. Otherwise just giving a comment is not a right thing.”
In another interview, Hindustan Times reported, with Gulf News, Mohanlal called MeToo movement a ‘fad’. “There’s no big problem in the Malayalam industry … You shouldn’t think of the #MeToo as a movement actually. It’s a fad and it’s turning into something of a fashion. Anything like that will have a lifespan for a bit,” he was quoted in the report.

Laugh all you want, predators; your arrogance blinds you to the strength that lies within us.The day will come when we rise, united and unstoppable, with our voices stronger than ever, and reclaim our power. Mohanlal quit his position as the President of AMMA after sexual misconduct cases came to light. He had a 17-member executive committee. All the members of the executive committee submitted their joint resignation. “AMMA has decided to disperse the executive committee on moral grounds in the light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee members. A new committee will be formed after an election within two months,” the statement read.
