Censor Board has decided to clear the film JNU — ‘Jahangir National University’ but not without appropriate cuts. A new report claimed the Central Board of Film Certification aka CBFC has ordered several cuts to the Vinay Mishra directorial. The report stated the Censor Board has said the film cannot make any reference to JNU — Jawaharlal Nehru University. The board has also ordered the filmmaker to remove mentions of politician Kanhaiya Kumar, activist Umar Khalid, and Jamia Millia Islamia University, among others.
“All official material and dialogues that refer to either have to be tweaked. Additionally, the material or dialogues cannot name Nehru. Mentions of NDTV, journalist Ravish Kumar, politician Kanhaiya Kumar, activist Umar Khalid, and Jamia Millia Islamia University have been asked to be removed completely. The Board noted that their inclusions will be seen as defamatory and contemptuous,” a source told Mid-Day.
“As per the CBFC’s instructions, clips from news channels and those featuring political leaders, MPs and other dignitaries have to be removed. The film also had posters of beef festivals, which have to be withdrawn. Since the makers maintain it is a fictitious story, the Board highlighted that it shouldn’t contribute to maligning institutions or people,” the insider added.
The report also mentioned that a song that features in the film glorifies violence. The board has ordered the makers should delete the song. The makers are yet to issue a statement about this development.
JNU is directed by Vinay Sharma. Apart from Urvashi Rautela, it also features an ensemble of talented actors, including Siddharth Bodke, Piyush Mishra, Ravi Kishan, Vijay Raaz, Rashmi Desai, Atul Pandey and Sonnalli Seygall. The film was originally slated to release on April 5. The poster was also released in March, which received strongly mixed reactions. However, the film was delayed and is now releasing on June 21.
