Rajiv entered the film world in 1983 with Ek Jaan Hain Hum, but it was not so well received by the audience. After this, he also worked in a few other movies, but didn’t get much recognition. In 1985, he managed to get his first breakthrough after appearing in the romantic drama film, Ram Teri Ganga Maili alongside actress Mandakini. The movie was directed by Raj Kapoor and was a huge hit. It is included in the All-time Blockbusters list of Indian cinema and was certified a Diamond Jubilee in Mumbai and a Golden Jubilee in other major cities. The film was the year’s highest-grossing film and was also one of the highest-grossing films of the 1980s.
Although the movie was a superhit, Mandakini stole the limelight because of her bold scenes in the film. This scenario created negativity in Rajiv’s mind. Reports suggest Rajiv spoke to Raj Kapoor several times about this and wanted Raj Kapoor to make one more film, keeping him in focus. He asked his father many times about this, but Raj Kapoor could not find any such script in which he could present his son in a different style. This incident created bitterness between father and son. Out of resentment, Rajiv Kapoor started making films for other banners, but did not get much benefit. He was last seen in the 2022 sports film Toolsidas Junior, directed by Mridul Mahendra.
However, the actor died due to a heart attack on February 9, 2021.
