Tamil Nadu’s entertainment industry and politics are synonymous with two names: J Jayalalithaa and MG Ramachandran, who were among the most beloved and recognised actors-turned-politicians in the state. Their on-screen romances were adored by the masses, resulting in numerous hits together. Reports suggest that Jayalalithaa was deeply in love with MGR, but sadly, her love story remained incomplete as she chose not to marry anyone. Here’s a closer look at her story.

Jayalalithaa, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, was a prominent figure in the Tamil film industry and later had a successful political career. Like every celebrity, her personal life was under constant media scrutiny, particularly her love life. Reports indicate that Jayalalithaa was romantically involved with MG Ramachandran, an influential personality in Tamil Nadu and a former Chief Minister. The media often buzzed about their alleged affair. Interestingly, the duo, who were former actors, starred together in approximately 28 blockbuster films. Moreover, in Jayalalithaa’s political journey, MGR played a pivotal role in shaping her career.

As per further reports, Jayalalithaa decided to leave the film industry at the peak of her career, purportedly on the advice of her close confidant, MG Ramachandran. During his tenure as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa joined his party AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) in 1982. It is also reported that she expressed a desire to marry MGR, despite him being already married and 31 years her senior. However, MGR was reportedly unwilling to formalise their relationship.

Subsequently, Jayalalithaa was rumoured to be engaged to Arun Kumar, the son of a family friend. Nevertheless, the late politician remained unmarried throughout her life. In 1991, she made history by becoming the youngest Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a position she held for six terms. During her tenure, she adopted Sudhakaran, the nephew of her close friend Sasikala.

In 1997, the film Iruvar was released, loosely based on the lives of MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the movie starred Mohanlal and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles.
