Previously called the 'pale mountains', the Dolomites, which are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy, were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in August 2009. They have been named after the famous French mineralogist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu who was the first one to describe the dolomite rock, which is a type of carbonate rock responsible for imparting the characteristic shapes and colour to these mountains.
Adventurous sports like skiing in winter months and mountain climbing, hiking, cycling, and Base Jumping, as well as paragliding and hang gliding in summer and late spring/early autumn make the Dolomites an attractive tourist destination. Many people visit the Dolomites to climb the vie ferrate, protected paths created during the First World War.
