Maha Shivaratri is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism. As per beliefs, Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati on this auspicious day. This year, Maha Shivaratri will be celebrated on March 8. It is believed that some food items and other things donated on this day can bring good fortune and luck in your life. A Vastu consultant and astrologer from Bhopal, Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma has talked more about it in an interaction with News18 Hindi.

1. Ghee

Lord Shiv can be pleased by applying a paste made of ghee on the Shiva Lingam stone. Besides the paste, you can also donate this to the poor and needy to avert the problems in your life. This can also remove the problems or the negative energies in your house.

2. Milk

Performing milk Abhishekam or pouring milk over the Shiva Lingam on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri is believed to bring happiness and prosperity. As per beliefs, pouring milk over the Shiva Lingam can strengthen the weak moon in the birth chart. This will guarantee a lot of mental peace to the devotee.

3. Black sesame seeds

Offering Black sesame seeds to Lord Shiva on Maha Shivratri pleases ancestors, as per beliefs. This can also remove the Pitra Dosha (negative karma from ancestors causing obstacles in descendants’ lives). According to the beliefs, donating sesame seeds can also lead to the completion of the pending tasks or assignments.

4. Donation of clothes

Donating clothes to a poor person on Maha Shivaratri can solve financial problems in your life. This increases the income in the house, gets rid of debt and the devotees also get blessed by Lord Shiva.

Besides these things, sugar, honey, Bel Patra, Sandalwood Paste, etc can also be offered to the Lord Shiva.

As per beliefs, Maha Shivratri is observed to remember the day when Lord Shiva drank the poison. This poison got churned out from the ocean during Samudra Manthan and protected the world from darkness and dismay. This poison got stored in his throat thus, making it blue which is the reason that Lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth (blue throat).
