Pitru Paksha, a significant period in Sanatan Dharma, is believed to be when ancestors visit the earth to meet their descendants. During these 15 days, families perform rituals like Shradh Karma, Pinddaan, and Tarpan to pray for the peace of their ancestors’ souls. In 2024, Pitru Paksha will take place from September 18 to October 2.
One common belief is that buying new items during this period is forbidden. According to Pandit Pujari Mishra, many people avoid shopping as they believe that it does displease their ancestors. Instead, it is a time to focus on honouring the departed, seeking their blessings, and ensuring their satisfaction through dedicated rituals and prayers. Pandit Mishra debunked this myth and said that no sacred text or scripture preaches avoidance of shopping during Pitru Paksha.
Pandit Pujari Mishra from the 108-foot Hanuman temple in Karol Bagh mentioned that we should indeed purchase items during this period. Some individuals have developed a belief that goods shouldn’t be bought, but that’s not the case. He also emphasized that performing Puja and reading the Bhagavad Gita during this time yields special benefits.
The main significance of Pitru Paksha is to pay respect and perform rituals (Shradh or Tarpan) for deceased ancestors, seeking their blessings and ensuring their souls attain peace in the afterlife. According to Hindu belief, during this time, the souls of ancestors come down to the earthly realm, and the offerings made by their descendants help them rest in peace.
Pitru Paksha reinforces the belief in karma and the afterlife. By performing these rituals, one can erase the karmic debts (Pitru Rina) owed to their ancestors, facilitating their moksha (liberation). It is believed that neglecting these rituals like Shradh and Tarpan may bring disharmony or obstacles in life while performing them ensures the well-being and prosperity of descendants.
