Chaturmas 2024: Astrologer Shares Dates And Auspicious Works To Avoid For 4 Months
The Chaturmas period will end on Dev Uthani Ekadashi ceremony, November 12 when Lord Vishnu wakes up from the Yog Nindra.

Chaturmas, meaning four months, is a holy period that consists of four months of the Hindu Calendar-Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Kartik. As per Hindu beliefs, Lord Vishnu goes into Yog Nindra or sleep during this time. In a conversation with Local 18 an astrologer from Deoghar, Jharkhand Pandit Nand Kishore Mudgal shared when Chaturmas will commence. The astrologer also talked about the possible impacts of this period.

As per the astrologer, the Chaturmas will start from July 17. According to Pandit Nand Kishore, all the auspicious works including mundan or tonsuring and Janeu Sanskar are avoided during this period. He added that other activities like housewarming and wedding ceremonies should not be done during this period. The Chaturmas period will end on Dev Uthani Ekadashi ceremony, November 12 when Lord Vishnu wakes up from the Yog Nindra.

The astrologer revealed many other things related to the period of Chaturmas. According to him, due to the onset of this period, some festivals will be celebrated 11-15 days earlier. In 2023, Krishna Janmashtami was celebrated on September 11. This year, however, Krishna Janmashtami will be marked on August 26.

The devotees are advised to avoid certain foods during the Chaturmas period. As per the Ayurveda, consuming green leafy vegetables in Shravan and curd in Bhadrapad should be avoided. The believers should abstain from consuming milk in Ashwin and pulses and dal in the Karthik month. It is because these monsoon months are known for spreading several infections. The Ayurveda says that monsoon vitiates vaata, kapha and pitta (movement, metabolism and structural) functions of the human body. This leads to several disorders and infections.

The chances of water contamination are also high in this season leading to waterborne diseases. The rainy season breeds ground worms and many studies suggest that green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, cabbage etc are prone to bacterial infections in this season. People should also try having early dinners to avoid slowing their metabolic activity.
