New Delhi: With 517 reported cases of female mortality due to pregnancy-related complications per one lakh live births, woman and child healthcare remained poorest in Uttar Pradesh.
The rate is significantly higher than the national average of 301 such deaths, which is five times the stated target of less than 100 deaths per one lakh live births, a study said.
Based on official estimates of Registrar General of India (RGI), Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of 301 would mean approximately 77,000 women dying every year due to maternity-related problems.
In other words, one woman dying every seven minutes due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, it said.
The goal of the government is to bring down the mortality rate to less than 100 per 1,00,000 live births, official sources said.
But despite all the maternal health awareness programmes and improvement in primary health care system, very few states are close to this desired figure.
Kerala comes almost close to the target with deaths as low as 110 per one lakh live births. This is almost coming down to half of what was there in UP in 1999.
