After a dry and sunny Karikkidakam, the state welcomed the month of Chingam with a widespread heavy rainfall on Friday. Heavy to very heavy rainfalls were reported in several parts of the state under the influence of a low pressure area developed near the Orissa coast. Rain wreaked havoc on several places in Idukki and Kottayam districts.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), very heavy rainfall is expected in both districts till Sunday. Thanks to the widespread rainfall, deficiency of south west monsoon has decreased from 43 per cent in last week to 35 per cent on Friday.
Against the long period average of 163.45 cm, the state got only 107 cm rainfall so far.
An IMD update issued on Friday says, “Under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay ofBengal and adjoining coastal areas of north Orissa and West Bengal, a low pressure area was formed over north west Bay of Bengal. Associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above sea level”.
K Santhosh, director, IMD, Thiruvananthapuram, said, “South west monsoon has become active. There will be widespread rainfall over the State for two days. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Kottayam and Idukki districts”.
Thodupuzha (11 cm) recorded the highest rainfall on Friday.
