West Bengal Cabinet clears land for AIIMS like hospital at Kalyani
"We have cleared the entire land valued at Rs 57 crore for the proposed AIIMS-like super-speciality hospital at Kalyani," Finance and Industry Minister Amit Mitra said.

Kolkata: The West Bengal Cabinet on Tuesday cleared 180 acres of land for the proposed AIIMS-like super- speciality hospital at Kalyani in Nadia district.

Speaking about the Cabinet decision, state's Finance and Industry Minister Amit Mitra on Tuesday said the entire 180 acres of land lay with the state government under the Animal Resources Development Department.

"We have cleared the entire land valued at Rs 57 crore for the proposed AIIMS-like super-speciality hospital at Kalyani," Mitra said.

"Since the land is in hand, no problem is now left for this project. Now the issue is with the Centre for implementation of the project," Mitra said.

The Centre had earlier given clearance to set up an AIIMS-like super-speciality hospital at Kalyani, at a distance of about 50 kms from Kolkata.

At a time when state's health infrastructure was facing flak with the Medical Council of India sharply reducing the number of medical seats in the state citing inadequate facilities, clearance to an AIIMS-like institution had in fact brought cheer to the state.

Setting up an AIIMS at Kalyani was a long-standing demand of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government.

Former Union minister Deepa Das Munshi had tried to get the project for Raigunj, her constituency, but Kalyani in Nadia finally won the day bagging the prestigious project.
