New Delhi: Put it down to her struggles to make an impact in the sport that just saw an Althea Gibson or the pure passion for change, being the voice of reason is something Venus Williams is all too familiar with. She was recently honoured with the Americanism Award for backing Shahar Peer after the Israeli was denied a visa to play in the Dubai WTA event earlier this year.
Venus says, "I've been at the top of my sport for a while so I think it helps that people know my name and people know my face so the message was able to get delivered and so I think that made a big difference."
And it's not the first time that Venus has carried the baton of change. She fought for equal prize money for women and men at Wimbledon that promptly came into effect from 2007, the year she won.
She may have been overpowered by sister Serena at SW19 this time, but is all ready for the US Open.
"I always have to feel like I'm at the top of my game and if I ever am not I have to tell myself that I am. And mind over matter so with everything going on this is one of the best things and we worked hard to fit it in the schedule, " quips Venus
Serena and Venus are in the same half for this Slam, so in all probability, it will be a super semifinal between the two at Flushing Meadows.
Venus sayus, "That would be great. I always love seeing her win except obviously when she's across the net from me and I think it's just a great story for tennis and for sports when we meet each other it grows our sport so I hope that we can do that just for that not even just for ourselves and because it's a family thing."
And if there is no singles crown, there is always doubles..
Venus says, “W'e both go home happy.”
So get ready for some great tennis action from the sisters this time too.
