CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government is likely to file a petition before the Supreme Court on June 13 or 14 challenging the interim stay, granted by the Madras High Court, to postpone the implementation of Uniform School Education scheme.School Education minister C Ve Shanmugam held detailed discussions with senior advocates Guru Krishnakumar and Subramaniya Prasad and some Supreme Court lawyers in New Delhi on Saturday. Top School Education officials are also in Delhi. On Friday, the Madras High Court stayed the operation of an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act indefinitely postponing the implementation of the Uniform School Education (USE). It said for Class 1 and 6, the USE syllabus which came into effect in 2010-11 would continue. For other classes — Class 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 — the USE syllabus which was to come into effect from this academic year would be implemented. On Friday, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said the purpose of the USE would not be served just by printing uniform textbooks as USE was a lofty objective.Jayalalithaa has said efficient implementation of USE depends on various factors including infrastructure and better management of schools. As per Muthukumaran committee’s recommendations, a comprehensive legislation incorporating various aspects of USE would be necessary. An expert committee would be formed to study the USE and a perfect system would be implemented in due course, she said.
