New Delhi: In the men's draw of the US Open, Lleyton Hewitt had an easy outing in the first round with the 26-year-old advancing to the second round with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over Amer Delic of the US at the Flushing Meadows.
"Yes, where my game is at, apart from Roger (Federer) and Rafa (Nadal), like we keep talking about every press conference, they've been the two dominant players in the Slams over the last four or five years. No one really has had a chance to win any of the other slams basically. That's what my goal is. That's what you keep striving towards, working for. Hopefully it will be around the corner," Lleyton Hewitt said.
Sixth seed James Blake and No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic also had no troubles at all as they brushed aside the challenges of American Michael Russell 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 and Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 respectively.
The men lost two more seeds, No. 32 Ivo Karlovic, a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (6), 6-4 loser to Arnaud Clement of France; and No. 29 Filippo Volandri, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Michael Llodra of France, making five women's and six men's victims in the first two days.
Argentinians Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Monaco also advanced to the second round defeating Michael McClune of the United States 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (0), and Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 respectively.
No. 12 Ivan Ljubicic beat Kristof Vliegen of Belgium 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-1, and 15th-seeded David Ferrer defeated Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
Justin Gimelstob lost to 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick in the first round in straight sets 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-3.
The 30-year-old American is retiring after a 12-year run in professional tennis that included two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles with Venus Williams.
