Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey on Friday suspended four rebel Samajwadi Party (SP) MLAs from the primary membership of the Vidhan Sabha. The four SP MLAs are Kalyan Singh Dohare, Omvati, Sunder Lal and Ratan Lal Ahirwar.
All of them had voted for Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha biennial polls in the state and also attended BSP meetings.
The Speaker, who had reserved his judgement in the case of on August 12, ruled their action was a violation of Article 2 (i) (a) of the 10th Schedule of the Constitution and hence, warranted their disqualification from the membership of Assembly.
He had on Friday fixed August 21 as the date of next hearing in the case of the fifth rebel MLA, Kamlesh Pathak, having separated his case as the respondent had tendered an apology to the party for his action.
Earlier, the counsel for the petitioner concluded his arguments and strongly pleaded for the disqualification of the MLAs for violating the whip on RS polls.
The MLAs had filed preliminary objections on the petition moved by the SP state general secretary and PWD Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav.
