The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Monday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to fill vacancies in the state Human Rights Commission within a month.

A bench of Chief Justice Shiva Kirti Singh and Justice DK Upadhyay gave the direction while hearing a public interest litigation filed by activist Nutan Thakur.

The state commission is without a chairman and two members.

The court, however, refused to hear Thakur's other prayer that to avoid vacancies in future, the appointment process shall begin six months before the end of terms of the members, and the persons be chosen three months beforehand. The court said this was a policy matter.

The petition stated that the term of the chairman, HK Sema, ended in May while that of members Vishnu Sahai and Asha Tiwari ended in December 2012 and in June.
