BANGALORE: Garbage dumps in the city have become a regular phenomenon, there are a few Bangaloreans who used to be defeated by the problem. The group calls themselves The Ugly Indians. They were recently seen in action in Tavarekere, near BTM Layout. Not only did they cleared the garbage dump, they also beautified the area with wall paintings. However, the place remained clean only for about 10 days. Today it has reclaimed it’s title of a garbage dumping area.Apart from clearing the mess in the locality, the team also stripped the walls in the vicinity off movie posters. Having done that they painted the walls near St Woods Complex. “The Ugly Indian team came here one month ago and cleaned the place themselves. Some residents also joined in. But it is sad to see that it has gone back to becoming the old garbage dumping place,” said a shopkeeper.Sharath Ganapathy, a commuter said that he was very disappointed by the garbage dump. He said, “I take this route everyday to travel to my house. It is sad to see waste dumped outside such plush flats. To make matters worse the pile emanates a foul smell.”The Corporator G Manjunath was unavailable for comments. The Palike’s apathy continues as Hemchandran, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Joint Commissioner for South zone was not only blissfully unaware of the Ugly Indian’s work, he also said that according to him the city is neat and clean. He said, “If there is such group I would like to welcome them, in fact, I would like to work with them if they come to us.” When further enquired about the cleaning initiatives taken up by the BBMP, he added, “We have a lot of people working towards keeping the city clean, from engineers to pourakarmikas and it sufficient to keep the city neat.”
