BANGALORE: The Bangalore Kidney Foundation will hold the Pt Mallikarjun Mansur Music Festival on September 25 and 26 at the JSS Auditorium. This year, the Pt Mallikarjun Mansur Award will be conferred on Pt Ulhas Kashalkar, guru, ITC Sangeet Research Academy. The award which consists of Rs 50,000, a shawl, a citation and a bronze bust of Pt Mansur will be conferred by the Governor, H R Bharadwaj on September 24.A torchbearer of India's pristine musical tradition, Nagpur-born Pt Ulhas Kashalkar is a leading voice of this generation. He is the recipient of several awards including the Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Jadubhatta Puraskar and Swar-Ratna Award.Pt Mallikarjun Mansur, the doyen of Hindustani classical music was treated at The Bangalore Kidney Foundation when he was brought with complaints of renal dysfunction. Inspite of the best medical help, he could not be saved. While Panditji was ill, and was under medical supervision, he decided to give concert after he recovered slightly. The great generous maestro donated the entire proceeds of the concert to the place where he was being treated. Hence, each year during the month of September, the foundation organises a Hindustani music festival to remember the great singer.The eighth Dhwani-BKF Pt Mallikarjun Mansur Music Festival which is being held in 2011 Bangalore is a very special event. This festival coincides with the 100th birth anniversary of Pt Mallikarjun Mansur.So far, the foundation has held seven festivals. All time greats like Pt Shivkumar Sharma, Vidushi Kishori Amonkar, Vidushi Shruhti Sadolikar, Vidushi Aarti Ankalikar, Vidushi Dhondutai Kulkarni, DR N Ranjan, Jayshree Patanekar, Manjusha Patil, Pt Vishwamohan Bhatt, Pt Sanjeev Abhyankar, Pt Ronu Mazumdar, Pt D K Datar, Pt Jayateerth Mevundi, Pt Suresh Talwalkar, Vidushi Vasundhara Komkali and so on have paid tribute to Pt Mallikarjun Mansur by performing at the festival.The Bangalore Kidney Foundation also confers the Pt Mallikarjun Mansur Award each year to a senior artiste who has made tremendous contribution to the field of Hindustani classical music both as a musician as well as a teacher. This award is conferred on the first day of the festival. The 2011 Pt Mallikarjun Mansur Award is being conferred on Pt Ulhas Kashalkar Guru ITC Sangeet Research Academy. Previous awardees are Pt Rajeshkar Mansur, Pt Biswajit Roy Chowdury, Vasundhara Komkali Math, Pt D K Datar, Pt Dattatreya Sadashiv Garud and Dhondutai Kulkarni. Governor H R Bhardwaj will confer the award on September 24 in JSS auditorium at 7 pm.
