ROURKELA: A tusker has been electrocuted near Oraghat village under Koida range of the Bonai forest division in Sundargarh district. It was buried on Saturday night after autopsy. Reports said the tusker had strayed into Oraghat on Friday night with two female pachyderms on Friday night.Bonai divisional forest officer (DFO) AK Mishra said investigation revealed that the animal was scratching its body against an electric pole carrying 11 KV overhead wires. The pole tilted and the head of the elephant came in contact with the sagging wires, killing it on the spot, the DFO said. According to locals, the other two elephants escaped unhurt, he added. He said the tusks weighed around 20 kg.Incidentally, three days back a herd strayed into a village under Barsuan forest range of the same division where an elephant gave birth to a calf. Later, the herd accompanied the baby elephant to the nearby forest.
