HYDERABAD: Nearly four years after its establishment, the Telangana University in Nizamabad district has finally assumed control over the colleges functioning under its jurisdiction.The authorities of Osmania University formally relinquished their hold on their affiliated colleges in Nizamabad district to the authorities of Telangana University here on Tuesday.Osmania University registrar V Kishan Rao formally handed over the letter of transfer of colleges in Nizamabad district to Telangana University registrar Shivshanker in the presence of new vice-chancellors S Satyanarayana (OU) and Mohd Akbar Ali Khan (TU) who have taken charge of their respective universities only recently.In all, there are 71 colleges (comprising 52 UG/PG colleges, 11 BEd colleges, seven MBA and MCA colleges and an oriental college) with student enrolment of 14,560 in Nizamabad district under the jurisdiction of OU and will now function under the jurisdiction of Telangana University.Till the establishment of three new universities called Telangana University in 2006, Palamur University in Mahaboobnagar and Mahatma Gandhi University in Nalgonda in 2008, the jurisdiction of Osmania University comprised five districts of Ranga Reddy, Medak, Nizamabad, Nalgonda and Mahaboobnagar including the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Last year, 95 colleges in Mahaboobnagar district were transferred to Palamur University.  In May this year, 163 colleges in Nalgonda district were transferred to Mahatma Gandhi University.  Now, the colleges in Nizamabad district were transferred to Telangana University after the officials expressed readiness to take control of colleges in Nizamabad district.Osmania University vice-chancellor S Satyanarayana said that taking over a large number of different types of colleges would enhance the visibility of the new university and contribute to its academic vibrancy.Telangana University vice-chancellor Mohd Akbar Ali Khan said that assumption of control of the colleges was an opportunity and also a challenge to his university. He mentioned that the institutional framework and systems and procedures were in place at their university to handle these affairs.The meeting also discussed the modalities and issues involved in the transfer process such as conduct of admissions, examinations, joint inspections, constitution of academic bodies, preparation of academic calendar, sharing of fees and transfer of records.
