Trinamool to get 201 seats, Left to fall further, no improvement for BJP: ETV poll
Opinion poll redicts ruling Trinamool Congress is likely to come back to power in West Bengal with a two-third majority in the 2016 Assembly elections.

New Delhi: The ruling Trinamool Congress is likely to come back to power in West Bengal with a two-third majority in the 2016 Assembly elections, results of an ETV opinion poll suggested Wednesday.

The opinion poll conducted by ETV Bangla predicted that the TMC led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was likely to bag as many as 201 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, which is more than what it won in 2011.

The Left Front which has an electoral 'understanding' with the Congress, could end up with 34 seats, a smaller number than what it got last time. The Congress is predicted to get 27 seats.

The poll does not see any improvement for the BJP, forecasting just one seat for the saffron party.

The opinion poll was conducted by ETV reporters and resource persons in all constituencies across West Bengal, immediately after the election dates were announced this week.

In 2011 Mamata Banerjee's party, which was in an alliance with the Congress and SUCI(C) had won 227 seats, with the TMC alone netting 184. A year after the polls, she withdrew support to the UPA at the Centre.

The Left parties had won only 62, losing power in the state after three decades. The opinion poll suggests their performance is likely to dip even further.

West Bengal votes in six phases this time. The first phase will have two polling dates — April 4 and April 11. The other phases will be held on April 17, 21, 25, 30 and May 5.
