ADILABAD: Tribals generally impose social boycott as punishment for those suspected of practising sorcery. The tradition is strong in Uttnoor, Narnoor, Jainoor and Indravelli mandals in Adilabad district . The Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) officials, though aware of it, could not do much as tribals go by the word of the village head rather than the advice of an ITDA officer. In Kolamguda village under Bersiahpet panchayat of Uttnoor mandal, villagers boycotted the family of Sidam Nagarao on June 4 for alleged sorcery. The decision was taken by the villagers and their village head. ITDA officials, along with Uttnoor DSP Syed Server, held counselling for the villagers and after two days they agreed to allow Nagarao and his family back in the village. However, on November 15, the villagers boycotted the family again, holding Nagarao responsible for the illness of villagers and death of cattle. Nagarao says he and his family members are blamed for every illness or the death of a buffalo or a goat. So, his family is living on the outskirts of the village, along with the families of two of his brothers. If they enter the village against the wish of other villagers, they would be beaten up, he said.
