BANGALORE: If it had escaped your notice that it was Christmas on Sunday and innocently drove down to the shopping and pub—hopping nerve centre of the City—Brigade Road and Commercial Street—then the scene must have been a shock. The decorations and festive lighting was pleasant but the slow-moving traffic was difficult to handle even by the usual standards. But, traffic police personnel were deployed in large numbers to control the vehicular flow. Brigade Road choked under the pressure and controlling road rage, triggered by insufficient parking space and the crowds spilling on to the roads, was an issue. But, the traffic was under the control of the police and they came in way for praise, for a change, from commuters. “The traffic police needs to be appreciated for the work they did. They took charge of roads in the centre of the city and regulated movement of vehicles and pedestrians,” said Sandeep Katti, a lawyer and a regular commuter on the road.In preparation for New Year, traffic cops are taking steps to streamline vehicle movements in all parts of the city, especially areas that draw massive crowds on weekends and holidays. Speaking to City Express, Deputy Commissioner of Police with the Traffic Management Centre said, “In the coming weekend, we will ban movement of vehicles on all four sides of Brigade Road and Mahatma Gandhi Road. We will also deploy extra traffic personnel at places that attract crowds. We will also monitor no parking zones to avoid traffic jams and to allow free flow of vehicles.” With the city gearing up for New Year parties, reducing the number of complaints on traffic management is a challenge for the Traffic Police. The department has quite a task in front of them for on Sunday many were unimpressed by the arrangements.“There is insufficient parking space in the area. Parking of vehicles spilled over to the main road causing trouble for other commuters,” said Nagarjuna, a lawyer who had trouble accessing his office.
