New York: Tom Hanks’ image as one of Hollywood’s genuine “nice guys” is getting a beating. And, the person doing all the mudslinging happens to be the Oscar-winning star’s late ex wife Susan Dillingham.
Author David Gardner uncovered court papers of the couple’s divorce while researching for upcoming biography "The Tom Hanks Enigma".
In them, Dillingham not only charges the Forrest Gump star with harassing her, but also attempting to destroy her career as an actress.
"My husband has repeatedly verbally abused and humiliated me during the past 90 days in my home. This caused me to suffer great emotional distress," the New York Post quoted Dillingham’s letter to an LA court in asking for a restraining order against Hanks.
In another legal missive Dillingham wrote that Hanks’ behaviour in the bitter three-year divorce saga was meant to divert her attention from her job.
"(It's) designed to harass and upset me at a time when I should be focusing all of my energies on my job," she wrote in one legal missive.
However, Hanks was not about to take the jab lying down and shot back in his own legal filing, stating that Dillingham was delaying a divorce trial "merely to harass me and try to squeeze an unfair settlement out of me."
In his book, Gardner also reveals that Hanks' kid brother, Jim, played a Forrest Gump-type character in a little-known soft-core sex flick two years before Tom won an Oscar for a similar role.
The couple finally divorced in 1987, and Dillingham, whose stage name was Samantha Lewes, died from bone cancer in 2002.
A year after the divorce, Hanks married his current wife Rita Wilson.
