As deadline to reimburse fee amount to the schools nears, student enrolment under the Right to Education (RTE) Act quota is witnessing a significant rise. In less than a month over 7,000 primary schoolchildren have taken admission under the RTE quota.
As on Tuesday, 49,026 children have secured admissions under the RTE quota in Class I in 8,028 schools across the state. This is a significant increase when compared to 41,663 children in June.
By September the government is expected to make its first instalment of the 50 per cent fee reimbursement to the schools.
“The numbers are going up. If admissions do not stop, we will not be able to calculate the amount of reimbursements to be made to non-minority schools,” said an official from the Department of Public Instruction.
According to the RTE rules framed by the government the extended period of admission shall be three months from the date of commencement of the academic year of a school.
It rule further states, “No child shall be denied admission if such admission is sought subsequent to the extended period.”
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the agency responsible for funding RTE, has got Rs 362.23 crore approved from the Ministry of Human Resources Development this year. However, the amount only covers teachers’ salaries, uniforms and civil works.
Primary and Secondary Education Secretary G Kumar Naik said the situation was being looked at closely.
“There has been a good five to 10 per cent increase in the numbers. That is a worry. Our internal calculation may be affected. I have to check if admissions are still on, or if this is just a delay in compiling statistics. Anyhow, no eligible child shall be denied admissions,” Naik told Express.
