Tiger killed in 'fake encounter', activists cry foul
A man-eater is killed in Maharashtra. Activists say it should have been captured.

New Delhi: Wildlife conservationists are up in arms against the shooting of a man-eating tiger, questioning why the animal was shot dead instead of being captured.

The tiger was shot in Tadoba Tiger reserve Maharashtra’s Chandrapur after it had turned a man-eater and killed four people. While the locals are relieved, the conservationists are crying foul.

“Why did they shoot it? Are we conserving tigers or killing them?” asks tiger expert Valmik Thapar.

The incident has raised several crucial questions-

  • Why were scientists involved with tiger conservation not informed to ensure the animal was trapped instead of being shot dead
  • Why was the tiger skinned before burning the carcass?
  • Was this a ‘fake’ tiger encounter ? Local people claim the man-eater was a female and what was shot dead finally is a young male.

Forest officials claim they shot the right tiger. The incident comes after the Prime Minister and National Board of Wildlife had expressed concern about the dwindling tiger population in the country.
