Tension prevailed at the Kanyakumari GH after police refused permission to relatives and anti-KKNPP protestors to take out a procession with the body of Sahayam (38), the fisherman from Idinthakarai who fell of a groyne and died of head injuries during the jal sathyagraha on Friday.
The relatives wanted to take Sahayam’s body in a procession through the coastal hamlets of Kanyakumari district to Idinthakarai but police refused permission stating that the situation in the coastal areas was tense after a series of protests.
Sahayam’s relatives, who demanded a judicial inquiry into his death, had earlier refused to receive his body stating that they wanted the post mortem to be conducted by a team of doctors.
Later on Sunday, the Nagercoil Sub Collector Shankar Lal Kumawat held an inquiry with the relatives and, on Monday morning, a team of doctors conducted the autopsy.
The body was handed over to his relatives around 10 am.
The relatives and K-plant protestors squatted before the government hospital against the denial of police permission.
After attempts by Nagercoil Sub Collector Kumawat, SP Pravesh Kumar and Tirunelveli Range DIG V Varadharaju failed, Collector S Nagarajan held talks with agitators. Sahayam’s body was later allowed to be taken to St Xavier’s Church at Kottar around 4.30 pm and, after a funeral mass that lasted for half an hour, it was taken to Idinthakarai through Suchinduram, Mylady and Anjugramam.
