CHENNAI: The Tirumalai Memorial Awards were presented to winners by scientist MS Swaminathan, here in Chennai, on Wednesday. E Haritha, from St Joseph’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, came first in the state-level competition held by the Gandhi Centre in Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya on October 30. The test with the topic My Experiments with Truth was held by the centre and around 20,000 students participated in it, from across the state. Based on the scores, students were shortlisted and awarded cash prizes along with certificates and medals.As many as 3,268 students participated from Sethu Baskara Matriculation Higher Secondary School and the school was presented a shield for maximum participation. Speaking on the occasion, Swaminathan said that Gandhi’s life itself was a message for everyone.Swaminathan congratulated the young students for showcasing their interest towards Mahatma Gandhi and also for participating in the event organised by the Gandhi Centre. Looking globally, the scientist recalled the efforts undertaken by Martin Luther King for the upliftment of African Americans.He elaborated on the life of Gandhi to inspire the young minds present at the venue. Furthering his speech, Swaminathan urged the students to put Gandhian thoughts into practice so as to spread the values of life as seen by Gandhi.Speaking about TD Tirumalai, Rammohan, a Gandhian and a retired Railways Employee, said that Tirumalai launched his services to the nation when the Quit India movement was on. “Tirumalai was a man of vision and he educated the youth on Gandhian ideas”, Rammohan said and added “Tirumalai dedicated his life to spreading Gandhian ideologies."
