Founder-editor of Tehelka Tarun Tejpal stepped aside last week for a period of six months after allegations of sexual assault were made against him by a woman journalist with Shoma Chaudhury taking charge in his absence.
Timeline of the case:
November 7, 2013: Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal allegedly sexually assaults a woman colleague during 'Think' festival in Goa
November 8, 2013: Tejpal allegedly sexually assaults the same woman colleague again in an elevator
November 18, 2013: The journalist writes an email to managing editor Shoma Chaudhury detailing the alleged sexual assault. The alleged victim demands inquiry according to guidelines of Vishaka judgment and an apology from Tejpal.
November 20, 2013: Tejpal sends 'atonement' email to Chaudhury, admitting a 'bad lapse of judgment'. Tejpal recuses himself from the magazine's editorship for 6 months as 'penance' for his 'misconduct'. Chaudhury forwards Tejpal's email to Tehelka staff, adds a short note.
Chaudhury mail to staffers calls it an 'untoward incident', says they responded with 'right thought and action'. Tejpal's email and Chaudhury's version are leaked and posted on a social website.
November 21, 2013: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar says an inquiry will be conducted into the incident by the Goa Police.
November 22, 2013: The Goa police takes suo motu cognisance & lodges a FIR
November 23, 2013: A Goa police team arrives in Delhi, questions Shoma at Tehelka office. The police also question 3 Tehelka staffers named as witnesses in complainant's email to Shoma. Alleged victim issues statement saying attempts being made to pressurise her family.
November 25, 2013: Complainant resigns, says she has been deeply traumatised by the lack of support by the organisation. Tarun Tejpal moves Delhi High Court for transit anticipatory bail.
November 26, 2013: Thew Goa Police records the girl's statement.
