Thieves escaped with Rs 5.5 lakh from an engineer attached to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) here on Thursday.
Police said Balamurugan, working as Assistant Engineer in Madambakkam, had decided to buy a piece of land in the suburb. In order to raise the huge sum required, the TANGEDCO official took a loan of Rs 3.2 lakh from his friend and kept it in the glove cabinet of his bike. To mobilise more money, he went to a nationalised bank near Tambaram, where he pledged his wife’s jewels to raise a further Rs 2.3 lakh.
He kept both the cash packets in that glove cabinet of the motorcycle and was on his way to make the payment for the land. He stopped at Madambakkam sub-station to meet one of his colleagues for a brief period. When he came back, he found that the glove cabinet opened and the cash missing.
He lodged a complaint with Madambakkam police who registered a case and were investigating.
Theft on board MTC bus
Gold jewels weighing 12 sovereigns were stolen from a woman’s bag on Wednesday night while she was travelling in an MTC bus.
Police said Sunitha (29) was on her way to attend a family function on Wednesday night. She boarded a bus near her residence in Tiruvancherry, near Tambaram, when the incident took place. She had kept 12 sovereigns gold jewels in her bag. When she alighted at Tambaram, she found that the bag was slit open and the valuables were missing. Based on her complaint, a case was registered by Selaiyur police.
Rs 5 lakh stolen
A woman, Krishnaveni, was robbed of Rs 5 lakh at New Washermenpet on Thursday after a motorcycle-borne duo snatched her purse and made away with it.
Man Robbed of Rs 1.35 lakh
A Vyasarpadi resident, Shankar (40), was allegedly robbed of Rs 1.35 lakh, on the MH Road on Thursday. The cash was kept it in the glove cabinet of his two-wheeler. A case was registered with Sembium police.
