Tamil Nadu and Bihar among Top 10 states/Union Territories safest for women in India
A study released by the National Crime Records Bureau suggests that smaller states like Nagaland, Lakshadweep are the safest for women.

Crime against women has been a menace prevalent in our society for ages. From instances of rapes to domestic violence, women have been subjected to heinous crimes.

Much has been written and talked about states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh etc being the states most prone to crime against women. But which are the states that are the safest for women in our country?

A study released by the National Crime Records Bureau suggests that smaller states like Nagaland, Lakshadweep are the safest for women. However, there are some names in the list that also come as a surprise. Take a look:

1. Nagaland

The northeastern state of Nagaland, which in the recent past grabbed headlines over a peace accord and a coveted Army operation following an ambush by NSCN(K) terrorists, is the safest state for women in the country. According to the NCRB data, there has been 67 instances of crime against women in 2014. Keeping into consideration the female population of the state, the rate of total cognizable crimes against women is as low as 6%, making Nagaland the only state with a single digit mark in this regard.

2. Lakshadweep

This union territory, a group of 36 islands, is also among the safest places for women in the country. With just four instances reported in 2014, the rate of total cognizable crimes against women stands at 10%.

3. Puducherry

Formerly known as Pondicherry, the Union Territory comprising just four districts stands tall in the list as the third safest region in the country. As many as 77 cases of crime came to light in 2014, keeping the south Indian Union Territory at a rate of 10.6% in total cognizable crimes against women.

4. Dadra and Nagar Haveli

Spread over an area of 491 square kilometre, Dadra and Nagar Haveli is yet another Union Territory that is among the safest for women. With 21 instances reported in 2014, the rate of total cognizable crimes against women stands at 11.1%.

5. Daman & Diu

Established on May 30, 1987 with current population of just over 2 lakh, Daman & Diu is the last Union Territory in the list of top 10 safest places in the country. With as many as 15 cases of crime against women coming to light in 2014, the Union Territory has a rate of 14.6% of total cognizable crimes against women.

6. Tamil Nadu

Sixth in this list, the southern state is the first big state to feature among the safest in India. The state currently ruled by a female chief minister, J Jayalalithaa, recorded 6325 instances of crime against women. But owing to its female population, the rate total cognizable crimes against women in Tamil Nadu stands at 18.4.

7. Manipur

The northeastern state, connecting the Indian sub continent to Southeast Asia, often comes in news for ethnic violence. But the NCRB data has brought back the state among those safest for women in India. With 337 instances in 2014, the northeastern state has a rate of 26.7% of total cognizable crimes against women.

8. Meghalaya

The state from the northeastern part of the country, who name means the abode of clouds, is also a relatively safer place for women in India. Around 388 instances of crimes against women came to light in the 23rd most populous state of the country. Meghalaya has a rate of 28.8% of total cognizable crimes against women.

9. Uttarakhand

The state which is known for its beautiful hills and temples stands at the ninth place among those safest for women. As many as 1395 cases of crime against women came to light in 2014, keeping the 15-year-old state at a rate of 27.4% in total cognizable crimes against women.

10. Bihar

The last but not the least, Bihar is probably the most surprising name featuring in the list of the safest states and Union Territories for women. While the number of instances of such crimes stands at over 15,000, the huge population of the state keeps the rate at 31.3%.
