Sushma Swaraj to Visit Nepal in February to Revive Ties
A release from the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday said that the visit was “in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level political exchanges between India and Nepal, and reflects the expanding bilateral partnership and the importance that the two countries attach to further strengthening it across diverse sectors.”

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is all set to visit Kathmandu from February 1. The two-day visit comes just weeks after the first historic election under the new Constitution of the country after which a coalition Leftist government has come to power.

Even though he is yet to be officially sworn in, KP Oli is now the elected PM after winning the election along with former PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal through a coalition.

A release from the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday said that the visit was “in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level political exchanges between India and Nepal, and reflects the expanding bilateral partnership and the importance that the two countries attach to further strengthening it across diverse sectors.”

Interestingly, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reached out to the new Nepalese PM KP Oli after the latter came to power. Modi and Oli have had strained relations when Oli was the PM during 2015-16. Oli had also previously referred to Modi for his inability to visit shrines despite his wish during the Nepal visit in 2014.

“The upcoming visit will provide an opportunity to hold discussions with political leaders of Nepal on issues of mutual interest, and to advance age-old, special ties of friendship between India and Nepal,” the MEA release said.
