BANGALORE: Bangalore University (BU) Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev was attacked on Monday by a wooden stick which was thrown towards him by a group of students protesting over examination-related issues. Though he was not hurt, the wooden stick hit his head, before police officials rushed in and pushed the students away. Bangalore University witnessed another protest on Monday, the fourth in this month alone, with students from Bangalore Rural district seeking attention to various examination and revaluation. Some cases are severe in nature - many students have not yet received markscards, revaluation results since three years and the lack of revaluation centres in rural areas, it is learnt. Around 11.30 am, more than 50 students, including members of ABVP, gathered in front of Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev’s office on the Central College premises, demanding immediate solutions to their grievances. K Lakshminarayana, a sixth semester BSc student, said he has not received his I semester markscard. Adding to his woes, he has serious discrepancies in his fifth semester markscard, where he was marked ‘not present’ for one of the subjects.“I want to pursue MSc. My chances look bleak now, as I don’t even have proper markscards. What are the officials going to do about it?” he questioned. He was joined by Arpitha, a student from Kanakapura, who has been ‘wrongly’ awarded seven marks for one of the subjects. “There is no way I could have scored less. I have been performing consistently. This error can cost me a lot,” she said. As an attempt to summon the VC, students shouted ‘VC come out’ and ‘We want justice’. When VC Prabhu Dev reached the spot to address the students, he was clearly overpowered. “Give me 72 hours. I will solve all your problems. I have to leave now to meet the Governor,” he said, accepting the memorandum and documents from students. Angered by the lack of attention, some students tried to prevent him from reaching his car. ‘Remedy In One Week’Meanwhile, Registrar (Administration) Dr B C Mylarappa met the students about an hour after VC Prabhu Dev left the campus. He assured students that all examination-related problems would be solved in a week’s time. “I want you (students) to understand that BU is a big university. I am aware of the discrepancies in the issue of markscards and revaluation. I will call a meeting with Registrar (Evaluation) and all concerned special officers tomorrow. It is wrong to target the VC or Registrar alone for exam problems. We are not directly responsible. The entire system is at fault sometimes,” he told students. Teachers stage protestIt was not just students. Teachers also staged a protest. Classes were not held on the Jnana Bharathi campus as members of the Bangalore University Teachers Council (BUTC) struck work in protest against the alleged attack on Director of the university’s Correspondence Courses and Distance Education Dr B R Niranjan recently. The teachers, in a memorandum submitted to the Governor, have sought a ban on Sri Rama Sene and increase security on the Jnana Bharathi campus. They have also sought blacklisting of the distance education study centres which were involved in malpractices.
