PUDUCHERRY: Around three houses at Chinnamudaliarchavady village in Villupuram near here collapsed on Monday night after sea water entered the buildings. According to the locals, the unoccupied houses were built years ago when the sea was further away. However, following the construction of the Puducherry harbour, the coastline had got eroded and the sea had come further in near the constructions.On Monday night, owing to the cyclone that has formed in the Bay of Bengal, the sea remained rough and at one point, the waters entered the houses after which they collapsed.Fishermen said that no one was injured in the incident as the houses had been vacated a long time ago. When contacted, district officials said that the houses were already in a dilapidated state as they had been unused for a long time.Minister Inspects Villages, ChunnambarWelfare Minister P Rajavelu, on Tuesday, visited Panithittu following reports that sea water had entered the village owing to the rough weather condtions. He ordered officials to remain alert and take necessary precautions. The welfare Minister also visited the Chunnambar backwaters and inspected the safety measures taken with regard to the operation of boats for tourists and visitors . Express had reported on Tuesday that tourists were not insisted on wearing life jackets and the boats were overloaded on every trip.
