Kochi: Mohanlal, one of Kerala's famous actors, has decided to write a culinary book based on his 25 years of travelling experience within India.
According to Mohanlal, who has essayed roles in Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil films, work on the book will start next month and will take nearly a year to complete.
Describing food as a "lifelong passion", he said the book would be titled My Culinary Journey and would be published by the Bangalore-based Stark World Publishing Ltd.
It will give an insight on the food habits of the people from Nagercoil in the south to Kasaragod in North Kerala. It will also feature various mouth-watering unique and traditional recipes the actor came across from the region.
"I consider myself a foodie. Like I enjoy good music or great acting, I enjoy well made food. It could be simple as toddy and fish curry from the local toddy shop or a Thai prawn soup or the Arabic Mutabel as long as it is tasty," said Mohanlal.
The actor says his favourite dishes are Egg Aviyal (a mixture of egg and vegetables) and Dry Netholi (fish) and Onam Sadya (feast during Onam festival).
Mohanlal, who loves cooking, said he had a particular weakness for the delicacies of Malabar as in this region of North Kerala, food is traditionally intertwined with rituals, especially when it comes to weddings.
For example, he said in Mahe, (an enclave of Puducherry in Kerala), the bride's family will surprise the groom with varieties of food for 41 days after marriage and not a single dish is repeated.
Mohanlal, who also writes a food column for a Malayalam magazine, had launched a line of masalas and pickles under the brand name of 'Mohanlal's Taste buds' a couple of years ago.
The actor would soon be opening a hotel in Kochi called Travancore Court, which will have unique Travancore dishes. The hotel will have 100 paintings portraying the history Of Travancore, he said
Mohanlal recently released a book on Kerala. The 816-page tome is a first among destination books and includes 1,300 pictures that capture the extraordinary beauty of the state -- the land, the people, culture, the dances, festivals and everyday life.
Divided into 11 sections, the book has 27 maps that follow international cartography norms with five types of maps covering State, City, District Destination and Circuit along with a detailed backwaters map.
The book also features 48 impressions on Kerala by renowned pesonalities like Shashi Tharoor, M T Vasudevan Nair, actors Mohanlal and Mammooty, writer Anita Nair among others.
