BALASORE: It is hard work and proper guidance that make a winner. Tanmaya Kumar Patra, the topper of this year’s Council of Higher Secondary Examination (CHSE) Science stream, has proved it.A student of Upendra Nath College at Soro, about 35 km from Balasore, he has scored 555 marks out of 600. He has secured 95 in Mathematics, 96 in MIL (Sanskrit), 96 in Physics, 97 in Chemistry, 80 in English and 91 in Biology. The results were declared on Monday. What gives him immense pleasure is that being a small town boy, he has secured the top slot in the State pushing back the students from towering institutions like BJB, Ravenshaw and Fakir Mohan colleges. Son of Sidhanta Kumar Patra and Shasikala Parida, both teachers, Tanmaya hails from a nondescript Sirapur village in Soro block. He aims to do research in medical science. He had secured 17th position in HSC examination in 2009. He had then chosen to pursue Plus-II science from U N College. Tanmaya stayed in the college hostel and toiled for 10 hours daily. “I was confident to get a position but had never thought that I will stand first in the State. The result is overwhelming,” he said.Another student from the same college also figures in the top 10 list. Satyajit Panda from Ruso village here has secured fourth rank by scoring 550 marks. Son of a petty businessman Kamal Lochan Panda and Geetarani Panda, Satyajit aims to be a mechanical engineer. He has secured 1921st rank in the engineering stream of Orissa-JEE. Though Satyajit wants to pursue degree in one of the IITs, he is doubtful because of his parents’ poor financial condition.
