KOCHI: Over 24,775 families residing at 240 colonies in the city will benefit from the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) for slum dwellers under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban renewal Mission (JNNURM).A presentation was held in the Kochi Corporation Council Hall on Friday in which RAY state cell social development officer Philip Mathew presented the draft list of the slums that were identified in a city-level slum profiling conducted by the state.Under RAY, redevelopment of slums or new houses ranging from 25 square metres to 45 square metres will be given to slum dwellers. Renovation of existing houses will also be considered. The project also allows the civic body to look for a public-private partnership model. The resident can also undertake construction of his house, if he so chooses. Each household would get a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh from the centre, along with 5 percent interest subsidy on home loans up to Rs 2.5 lakh for construction.Tenants living in slums for more than two years and falling in the income category of below Rs 5,000 will benefit from the project. However, according the demand of the councillors, a survey will be conducted before June 15 to identify the number of colonies in the city.“The areas where 200 families are residing in one acre of land or minimum of 10 families dwelling in 25 cents can be considered for this project. The families dwelling near heaps of garbage and polluted water are also eligible to benefit from the project,” Philip Mathew said.
