Lucknow: Prakash Jha's "Aarakshan" hit multiplexes in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, a day after the Supreme Court scrapped the ban on its screening imposed by the state government.
"As the Supreme Court has set aside the order issued by the state government earlier, I asked the departmental officers yesterday to comply with it," Secretary (Entertainment Tax) Chandra Bhanu said.
"I have not seen the court order yet and have been told that the government order has been set aside," he added. However, the screening will be delayed in single screen theaters by a day.
"The movie is already running in single screens and at some places, the distributors are not ready to stop its screening," a cinema hall owner said.
Jha's film 'Aarakshan' was banned by Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. The UP government had on August 10 banned the film for two months citing law and order problem.Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, however, had lifted the ban later.
The decision was taken on the recommendation of high level committee constituted by state government to watch the movie. The SC on Friday quashed the ban imposed by the state, saying public discussion and dissent are necessary in a vibrant democracy.
A bench of justices Mukundakam Sharma and AR Dave lifted the state's on the film in UP holding that the restriction would go against the democratic value of free speech and expression.The apex court passed the order while upholding the writ petition filed by film maker Prakash Jha challenging the decision of UP, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. to suspend the screening of the film.
