New Delhi: High on a series of strong finishes on the ATP women's singles circuit, India's Sania Mirza has continued to rise in the world rankings, as she improved her career best position in singles by one place to be 27th.
Sania, 20, goes into the US Open starting on Monday seeded 26th. She is also on the back of a doubles title at the Pilot Pen tournament on Saturday partnering Mara Santangelo of Italy.
Sania's title winning performance at New Haven has boosted her doubles ranking to No. 20.
Among Indian women, Sania is followed by Sunitha Rao, who dropped one place in the rankings to be World No. 220. Shikha Uberoi moved one place up to take the 334th rank.
Among the men, Mahesh Bhupathi also improved his doubles ranking by two places to No. 18 after winning the doubles event at the Pilot Pen tournament.
Bhupathi's compatriot Rohan Bopanna fell 38 places to be placed at No. 261, while Prakash Amritraj also lost two positions to be 272 and Karan Rastogi four places to be 344.
Bopanna moved three places down to be 87th in the doubles rankings.
