Salem may become approver: CBI
Even though Salem has given a confessional statement, the CBI has to take the court's consent before he can be made an approver.

New Delhi: The CBI has not completely ruled out the possibility of making underworld don Abu Salem an approver in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

However CBI Director U S Misra said that the stage had not come as yet.

"The main accused in any case can be made an approver, but before that he or she has to make a confessional statement. Only after this can the CBI take the court's approval in making them an approver," said Misra.

He added that he had yet to go through Salem's confessional statement and once he sees the statement, only then would the future course of action on making Salem an approver be decided.

Misra said that Salem would be tried in the eight cases for which he was extradited from Portugal.

"When Salem was caught in Portugal, the CBI received all the cases against him from police stations in the country," said Misra.

The CBI has extradited the underworld don in three cases of extortion registered by the Delhi Police, two cases of murder by the Mumbai Police and three other cases registered by the CBI.
