Magician Samraj on Sunday performed The great Indian Rope Trick at Marine Drive as part of the Coir Tech Expo organised by the Coir Board at Marine Drive.
A large crowd gathered at the Marine Drive ground to see the ancient trick, rarely performed by magicians these days. Magician Samraj, dressed as a snake charmer, played his flute over a coiled rope, which climbed to a great height, dancing like a cobra.
The assistant then climbed to the top of the rope and returned. The rope then returned to its original form.
Even though the performance is not the original version of the ancient Great Indian Rope Trick, the crowd was exited over the performance.
“In the original version, the assistant scrambles to the top of the rope and then disappears. The magician calls for the boy, grows impatient, grabs a large knife and scrambles up the rope, and vanishes. Then limbs, a torso,
and a head fall out of the sky. The magician reappears, reassembles and covers the body parts, and from under a bloody sheet the boy reappears,” said Babu, a magic enthusiast.
Magician Samraj also performed other magical tricks for the public.
